#37 Sisters, 3 Faces Profiles by artist ISHMAEL CHITIYO
Ishmael was born in Chitingwiza, Zimbabwe, in 1982. His father is Mozambican, and he is the last child born into a family of 8 children. His mother died when he was 4 years old. His father raised the children alone, and due to financial strain, Ishmael could not finish his studies. He left school at 16, and his options for work were limited. His oldest brother, Ignatius Zuwakiyi, started to teach Ishmael how to sculpt stone. Ignatius is a very talented artist currently based at Chapungu Sculpture Centre. Another brother, Solomon Chitiyo, who trained with the famous first-generation artist, Sylvester Mubayi, also helped Ishmael while he was learning.
