Sonny Smart Rosan was born in 1987 in Tafara, Harare. The young Sonny was exposed to stone sculpture through family members. The senior artists encouraged him to focus on creativity and originality in his artworks. He excelled during drawing lessons. He would stay behind in class drawing illustration charts upon teacher requests while his peers were out in the school grounds.
